THE OPEN COLLECTION
“VLAD BASARAB TEPES / DRACULA – HISTORY AND LEGEND”
The official launch – in May 2009 at the Snagov Foundation headquarters
You can visit it in Snagov village, Snagov-Sat, at the address Sos. Snagov nr 78, Snagov-Sat.
The collection is an OPEN type collection (including postal cards, stamps, coins, maps, manuscripts, pictures, etc – whatever is related to the mentioned subject) and:
1. It contains 40 A4 plates (about 200 elements)
2. Will contain 120 A4 plates (about 500 elements)
The research includes: old maps, unpublished documents, history manuals, pictures and images, various records etc. The collection exemplifies at least 15 unknown aspects (compared to the referential bibliography, composed of over 20 important books on that subject). Each plate illustrates an event, a fact, a situation, a conclusion. There is a series of unique items (being hundreds years old).
The main objectives of this collection are:
1. To present in a lively, visual, unknown and pleasant way, however research-based, some postal documents, various written materials from many sources and countries – aspects of life and activities of this leader, who was considered by the historians as “a cruel, but correct.”
2. To (de)limit as accurate as possible the difference between the historical person Vlad Tepes and the fictious character Count Dracula from the homonym novel written by the Irish author Abraham Bram Stoker
3. To continue the development/increase of the collection – through including new topics / subjects
4. To continue to participate at international events and exhibition (until now, the collection has went around the world and received about 20 golden, wermail, silver medals – arriving in countries like: USA, Japan, Korea, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Spain, Turkey, etc)
Through placing and exposing the collection in The Snagov Area (at Foundation Snagov headquarters), we want to:
a) be the first and main tourist attraction (organized, documented and presented at international standards) in Snagov Area, alongside with developing other collection related to Snagov’s area history
b) to contribute to the increasing of the tourist attractions in Snagov Area, so that, together with others contributions in development of new attraction (mostly the tourist infrastructure), the Snagov area re-enters in the international tourist circuits and allows the economic re-launch of the area
The Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ novel was a source of inspiration for theatre and movie producers, fir writers and nonetheless for a lot of philatelic series. At an international level, it represented the catalyst and the conscious beginning of a new category of productions which has now a stable and important market share (because all cultures include characters, myths, habits and concerns – based on the same type of emotions, which are nowadays more frequently appealed and used by modern people (also because of stress) than in the past). Therefore, the common worldwide identifier and unifier of the whole category of products and associated market is that global brand of Dracula (arrived in that stage without the explicit and conscious specialists’ management and / or any corporation and group of interests).
In time, a lot of confusion and tendencies to mix the historic person to the fictional character appeared and accumulated (willingly and mainly unwillingly).
The collection intend to address exactly these aspects related to differences and similarities between the 2 characters (myth and reality), and this represents a central frequently-asked question by the tourists (not only before, but also after having fun with the fictious character – Dracula the Vampire).
We consider that a place which directly approaches this subject should exist at least in Romania. This is important so much as, at the Global Convention at Los Angeles (in 1997, when the “Dracula” novel had 100 years from publishing) that “Dracula belongs to Romanians”.
The collection is organized in parallel on the 2 character: Vlad Tepes – Dracula, emphasizing the person of Vlad Tepes. The objective is to know and sustain the truth for each character, in a scientific and visual form.
Various historical aspects are approached through dedicated topics, at least in a plate. Therefore, the subjects are very visual exposed - feature very appreciated especially by the new generation.
This collection demonstrates that Vlad Tepes was a bloody sovereign because the conjuncture pressed him:
a) alternative subordination/alliances (willingly and imposed) in a vassality form between Budapest and Istanbul, together with paying the tribute to Istanbul (because of changing the power balance – having the background of suites of crusades and ottoman attempts of conquering Europe)
b) internal fights among feudal coalitions who alternatively sustained the sovereign families of Danesti, respectively Draculesti
c) usual practices in those times (cruel, bloody, public punishments)
d) stopping the long series of boyars’ betrayal (in those times, the last 58 years before Vlad Tepes, each sovereign reigned (in average) 2 years)
e) the ruler’s wish to ensure the independence of UngroValahia (Tara Romaneasca + south of Transylvania) and ensuring and observing the administrative conditions (customs, taxes, strictly observed roads and commercial circuits, rules, etc) which would generate revenues and accumulation of wealth for local communities
f) correct relations between people (wit trust and predictability) - on the background of ancient traditions’ failing in the local communities under the pressure of many barbarian hordes passing through the country in the last hundreds years
The Dracula subject is very appreciated especially in UK and USA, where it is a part of the local culture and also global congresses are held. In these groups, however, seems to be too little an interest for the real (original) subject and too much preoccupation for the subject’s potential and impact to some categories of audience, willing to experience strong emotions.
Through the present material, we invite you to visit the collection itself – starting with May 2009
